We offer short courses to support people to increase racial literacy.

Short Course: Racial Literacy

We upskill

We help people increase racial literacy.

Why?

Research demonstrates racism is a learned and socialised behaviour countered by learning new ideas, addressing assumptions and accessing knowledge to develop skills.

Our approach is research and pedagogically-informed so courses are designed to diagnose and address racial literacy gaps around language and competency, resulting in increased confidence to address institutional and interpersonal racism.  Researchers, such as Picower (2009), Sleeter (2001) and Alcoff (1998), demonstrate people racialised as white can evolve professional skills by engaging with concepts of whiteness and expanding knowledge about race.

How?

We deliver courses online via Zoom in half day sessions. We offer courses at three different stages of development.

Beginner: I am new to work around race, whiteness and anti-racism

Intermediate: I have engaged and read about racism and/or whiteness but require more input to change practice

Advanced: I come with knowledge already; I require space to hone my skills to support others

Cost

£375 per person for a half day course. Use the form below to register, to contact us for quotes about group sessions, or for any other queries.

Racial Literacy Short Courses

Who?

Short courses provide an accessible way for people at any level in organisations to develop racial literacy and address race awareness gaps in professional knowledge. Courses are aimed at supporting white people to accelerate learning but we offer different access levels for mixed racial groups, depending on racial literacy needs.

Courses can be adapted around specific professional sectors (charities, NHS, education, social care, universities) with relevant research specifically tailored to audience. Do enquire on the form below.

Beginner

We establish people’s starting points and support people to evaluate and recognise where they are currently and what high quality racial literacy looks and sounds like. We cover whiteness, colour-blindness, language, different types of racism and socialised stereotypes.

Intermediate

We cover colour-evasion, learn to identify systemic racism and its social and emotional impact. Participants learn new ways to understand how white supremacy culture sustains racism, the role of intersectionality and how to counter assumptions. We unpack how race identity affects behaviours and people’s comforts.

Advanced

In the Advanced course, we explore our own proximities to whiteness as a structure and how this shapes our habits. We support one another to recognise and counter racist practices and develop internal architecture for anti-racist praxis. We focus on embodiment as a key area for race work.

What will I receive challenge on?

Our short courses raise awareness and challenge about the dynamics of whiteness:

  • Racism without racists
  • “attempts to reconcile guilt and complicity” (Tuck and Yang, 2012)
  • How whiteness is moving through you
  • Systemic understanding and witnessing of how racism can be manifested in groups
  • White saviourism & rescue
  • Silence as resistance
  • Abdication
